about

The Tides is about a storm at sea and the battles that have taken place across centuries between sailors and the elements. I wrote the song shortly after a big storm (by UK standards!!) which got me thinking about how a life at sea must come with an acceptance of this eternal battle and that, especially in the past, there was no guarantee you would return.

The pages turn again
This chapter never seems to end
A faded photograph
The image burned into my head
The orders coming down
And we respond without a sound
A final call to arms
The ship is pulling out to sea

And were sailing away
Across the tides we go to fight
A battle with the waves
And were sailing away
Prepare the helm for battle
Coming back again

The fight is underway
But keep your head bowed to the spray
And as we ride the waves
Our darkness never far away
The swell it starts to rise
And hide the panic in your eyes
We pull in unity
But there is no escape for me

And were sailing away
Across the tides we go to fight
A battle with the waves
And were sailing away
Prepare the helm for battle
Coming back again
